Caring for Your Night & Mouth Guard
How it works
It’s important that you care for your night and mouth guard properly so you can get the most out of your dental appliance.
Retainers / Night Guards/ Sports Mouthguard
- Do not eat or drink (except plain water) during usage.
- Ensure you brush your teeth before wearing your device.
Cleaning your device
- Clean the device daily with a toothbrush and cool or lukewarm water.
- You may also use mouthwash (non-alcoholic) or dish soap.
How often should you clean?
You should clean your device at least once a day. You may also want to deep clean it with an antibacterial tablet cleaner (Polident, Pearlie White etc) once per week or as needed. This can help kill any microorganisms and loosen debris.
If you don’t regularly clean your device, it can result in:
- Bacterial and/or fungal growth
- Bad Smell
- Bad Taste
- Build up of plaque and calculus
- Cloudy appearance
What to AVOID:
- Toothpaste. Regular toothpaste is abrasive. Using toothpaste to clean your device causes tiny scratches that bacteria and fungus like to live in. These scratches are difficult to clean once microbials have colonized them. Some night guards also have a lining that toothpaste can damage. Instead of toothpaste, you may use your regular dish soap.
- Hot water or high temperatures. Don’t boil your device or use hot water to wash or soak. Do not put it in the dishwasher. Heat can permanently warp the materials causing the device to no longer fit and requiring a replacement.
- Bleach. This chemical is too harsh and may damage it.
- Alcohol. Avoid cleaners (including mouthwash) that contain alcohol. Alcohol can damage your device.
